Gunbuster is a must-buy for any mecha-head, as far as I'm concerned. It's an earlier work by Hideaki Anno, the man who went on to make Evangelion. This could be a turn-off for you depending on how you see Eva, but I think it's a wonderful little show. It's an OAV that clocks in at six episodes, so you won't have to devote hours upon hours to finishing it. The writing it top-notch and the battles, while sparse, are intense. The entire show is a character drama at its core, played out against the back drop of an epic, interstellar war of survival. While it is lumped in with mecha shows (and rightfully so), the show spends most of its developing the cast, with the mecha battles taking second string. It's worth noting that Bandai didn't supply dubs for this release. For a lot of anime fans, that's not a problem. But I prefer watching a show with English audio, so it was a bit of a hassle to sift through the English subtitles.
