(UPI) -Three New Jeney fumbles in the final period set up touchdown runs by Richard Crump and Tony Davis and a 45-yard Tim Mazzetti field goal Sunday, helping the Boston Breakers to a 31-21 USFL victory over the Generals.

With the loss, the Generals dropped to 0-4 and remained the new league's only winless team. Boston, trailing 21-13 going into the fourth period, got the winning points on Mazzettis third field goal of the game, snapping a 21-21 tie with remaining. Mazzetti's field goal came three plays after New Jerseys Herschel Walker (97 yards on 21 carries) fumbled the ball on his own 32. On New Jersey's next possession, quarterback Bobby Scott fumbled on his own 10 and Boston nose tackle Jeff Gaylord recovered. Davis charged for a 10-yard touchdown on the next play for a 31-21 lead.

Boston safety Joe Restlc intercepted Scott pass on the next possession on the Boston 33. Restic finished with two fumble recoveries and an Interception in the fourth quarter. Crump finished with 67 yards on 16 carries and Davis added 70 yards on 13 carries for Boston, which won its third straight to improve to 3-1. The paid attendance at Giants Stadium was 41,218, but only 30,512 showed up during a steady rain. The Breakers tied the game by driving 59 yards after Restic recovered a fumble by the Generals' Maurice Carthon on the Boston 41.

After Johnnie Walton com- pleted a 16-yard pass to Beau Coash to bring the ball to the Generals 27, Crump rumbled for 8 yards and fumbled, but teammate Jerrell Franklin recovered on the New Jersey 18. National Sports Navratilova Whips Lloyd Times Newi Service NEW YORK Martina Navratilova said it was pretty close to as good as I can play, and Chris Evert Lloyd did not argue. She feally cleaned my clock, Lloyd told a Madison Square Garden crowd of 13,244 Sunday, after having been beaten, 6-2, 6-0, by the top-seeded Navratilova for the $80,000 first prize in the Virginia Slims of New York tennis championships. The loss was Lloyds most lopsided in 950 singles matches on the tour, spanning more than 13 years. It was inflicted by a confident, aggressive rival who swept 10 games from 2-all in the opening set, and whose record In the last 15 months has been extraordinary.

After winning 90 of 93 matches in 1982 en route to being named the years No. 1 player, Navratilova has won 24 in a row this season (27 over all), losing only an opening set to Hana Mandlikova in the first round of this $350,000 tournament. In further tribute to Navratilovas versatility, she and her partner, Pam Shriver, are also unbeaten in doubles this year. Besides her three-set victory over Mandlikova, Navratilova beat the three other seeded players Sylvia Hanika, Shriver and Lloyd who administered her only setbacks In 1982. Her tour earnings after the first three months of the year are $233,000.

Hanika defeated Billie Jean King, 6-1, 7-6, in the third-place match. It was not that Lloyd, who collected $45,000, played poorly. But Navratilova was feeling so strong, so settled about herself and her all-court southpaw game that she was even humming the words to Olivia Newton-Johns Lets Get Physical during her warmup as the song blared on the Gardens public-address system. Six of the eight previous matches between her and Lloyd had gone to three sets. In the locker room before the match, Navratilova's coach, Dr.

Renee Richards, had asked her, Are you ready to run for two hours?" The match might have gone that long had Lloyd capitalized on tne 3 break points she held with a vratilova serving at 2-all, (M0 in the first set. Sunday, the same pattern emerged. Lloyd drove an unforced forehand long and a forehand service return long, before Navratilova volleyed to deuce and held with a winning backhand lob. That was a crucial game, Navratilova said. I didnt get many first serves in and still won the game.

After that, I relaxed." Cook Leads After 3 Rounds PONTE VEDRA, Fla. (UPI) John Cook sank a 12-foot birdie putt on 17th hole Sunday to wind up one shot ahead of Bobby Clampett at the end of the third round of the $700,000 Tournament Players Championship, setting up a duel between two of the youngest golfers in the event for Monday's rain-delayed finale. Cook, 25-year-old former U.S. Amateur champ and winner of the 1981 Crosby, began the day with a two-stroke lead over the 23-year-old Clampett. But Clampett, winner of last falls Southern Open, gained a stroke by outscoring Cook 70-71 Sunday.

After 54 holes, Cook had a 6-under 210, Clampett a 5-under 211 and Vance Heafner, old man among the leaders at 28, was another stroke back with his 69-212. With the opening round delayed 24 hours because of heavy rain Thursday, tournament officials had planned to play 36 holes Sunday. But another early morning storm suspended play for three hours and the final round was postponed until Monday. first touchdown on a 33-yard pass to Eric Truvilllon Just 2:38 into the game. Rookie Kelvin Bryant, the USFLs leading rusher who scored two touchdowns and picked up 112 yards in 22 carries, tied the game with a 35-yard scoring gallop but the Bandits took the lead for good late in the first quarter when Jeff George intercepted a Chuck Fusina pass and returned it 22 yards for a touchdown.

Blitz Snap Slump CHICAGO (UPI) Greg Landry threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Doug Cozen and Kevin Long scored on a 1-yard run Sunday to lead the Chicago Blitz to a 20-14 USFL victory over the Los Angeles Express. The victory snapped the Blitz 2-game losing streak and gave Chicago a 2-2 record, while the Express fell to 2-2. A crowd of 10,936 saw the game, played in a constant rain during the second half. Cozens touchdown reception marked his first catch of the season and capped a 73-yard drive with 6:08 left in the third quarter that gave the Blitz a 17-7 lead. The key play on the drive was a 26-yard pass to Waymon Buggs on 3rd-and-10.

The Express came back to within 17-14 when Tom Ramsey hit Ricky Ellis on an 18-yard TD pass with 57 seconds left in the quarter. A poor Blitz punt gave the Express good field position on the drive. Federals Nab First in OT WASHINGTON (UPI) Kim Mc-Quilken fired a 22-yard touchdown strike to Joey Walters on the first drive of overtime Sunday to give the Washington Federals their first USFL victory, a 22-16 triumph over the Michigan Panthers. Washington, 1-3, drove 72 yards in just six plays of the extra period for the winning score. On 2nd-and-13, McQuilken found Walters wide open on the 10 and the 7-year veteran from Clemson ran untouched into the end zone.

Michigan kicker Novo Bojovic sent the game into overtime on the last play of regulation with a 43-yard field goal. The kick capped a dramatic 11-play, 60-yard drive in the final 2:24. Michigan, 1-3, recovered from a 16-7 halftime deficit when Bobby Hebert threw a 69-yard TD pass to Derek Holloway with 2:08 left in the third. Bo-jovics conversion attempt was blocked by Bob Barber and the Panthers trailed 16-13. Michigan, which had nine fumbles on the day and lost six, had turnovers on the three possessions before Bojovics tying kick.

With Reaves ignoring a steady rain, the Bandits, 4-0, scored on four of their first six possessions en route to a 27-13 halftime lead. Their defense took over in the second half to stop a Philadelphia comeback bid as the Stars lost for the first time in four games. Meyer, whose Blue Demons won the NIT in 1945 after losing in the finals to St. Johns in 1944, is back in the semifinals again.

DePaul, 20-11, meets Nebraska at Madison Square Garden Monday night, with Fresno State battling Wake Forest in the other semifinal matchup. The winners will meet Wednesday night to crown the 46th NIT champion. Meyer might be familiar with the NIT but DePauls opponent is a stranger to the 69-year-old coach. I dont know anything about Nebraska and thats OK because this is all for fun, Meyer said. It isnt how big you are.

Its how big you play and I hear the Cornhuskers play pretty big. Some of our kids couldnt guard a wooden Indian. They dont believe in defense and that means ahything can happen." Nebraska, 22-9, is away from home for the first time since the tournament began. "We are here because we played three games at home (Tulane, Iona and Texas Christian), Nebraska coach Moe Iba said. And I dont think that without the sold-out 15,000 fans rooting for us we would have been able to win all three of those games on the road." Zavialov, 27, crossed the grueling 30-kilometer course In 1 hour and 28 minutes and 13 seconds but Svan clocked 1:27.24.4 to capture his second World Cup race and cap a brilliant freshman tour in second place overall. Thomas Wassberg, also of Sweden, placed third in 1:29.16.3. Bill Koch, the U.S.

star who led the World Cup standings entering the event, was defeated on a course which he designed and helped build. The defending World Cup champion sank to ninth place and finished third for the season.
